At the start of your test, after you have done the eyesight test, you will be required to answer two questions about the maintainence car. All of the questions are explained below, if you get one or two of these wrong you will get one driving fault.
1). Show me how you would check that the horn is working?
Press the horn and listen to make sure it is working.
2). Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear?
First secure the vehicle with the footbrake, then demonstrate by taking off the parking brake and re-apply, the parking brake shouldn't go to the end of it's working travel and it should secure itself.
3). Show me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?
If the steering becomes heavy the steering may be faulty. Before starting the engine, apply pressure to the steering wheel, when you start the engine you should feel some movement in the wheel.
4). Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked?
Information can be found using the car manufacturer's manual. Check the tyre pressures by using a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust when the tyres are cold, including the spare tyre and remember to refit the valve caps.
5). Tell me how you would check the tyres to make sure they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road?
Do a visual check of the tyres to make sure there are no cuts or bulges, the minimum tread depth should be 1.6mm across the centre three quarters of the tyre and all the way around the circumference.
6). Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash?
The eyes and ears should be inline with the middle of the head restraint or as close as possible, adjust the head restraint so it's flat to the head - if adjustable.
7). Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey?
The brake pedal should not feel spongy or slack, as you drive off before building up speed try the brakes, they should not pull to one side.
8). Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system?
A warning light should illuminate on your dashboard with the letters "ABS" if there is a problem with the anti lock braking system.
9). Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens?
With the ignition on (do not start engine yet), set the fan speed to full power, turn the knob to direct the air flow to the front screen and turn the heat to full, for the rear screen press the button to turn on the heated rear screen.
10). Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers?
With the ignition on (do not start the engine yet) Operate control to wash and wipe the screen.
11). Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car?
With the ignition on (do not start the engine yet) press the brake pedal and ask your passenger to get out to have a look at the brake lights to see if they are working, or make use of reflections off garage doors or windows.
12). Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working on this car?
You would turn on the ignition, operate the control to turn on the dipped head lights, then get out of the car walk to the front and check the headlights are working then walk to the rear and check the tail lights are working.
13). Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly?
Swithch on the hazard warning lights and walk around the vehicle to see if all the bulbs are working.
14). Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car?
With the ignition on (do not start engine yet) turn on the driving lights first, then operate the swithch to turn on the dipped head lights, there will be an blue warning light illuminate on the dashboard.
15). Show me how you would switch on the fog lights, and explain when you would use them?
With the ignition on on (do not start the engine yet) first turn on the dipped headlights, then operate the switch to turn on the fog lights, you would put the fog lights on when visibility is less than 100 metres.
16). Open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine oil level, and tell me how you would check the engine oil?
Identify the dipstick, explain you would pull it out, wipe it clean with a clean cloth, put the dipstick back in then pull it out again, check the level against the minimum and maximum marks, if the level is low top up with engine oil.
17). Open the bonnet and Identify the windscreen washer reservoir and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level?
Open the bonnet and identify the windscreen reservoir, explain that you would check between minimum and maixumum markers but if you cant see them you would do a visual check by openining the cap and looking inside, if low top up with water or water and screen wash.
18). Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?
Open the bonnet and identify the brake fluid reservoir, explain that you would check the level is between the minimum and maximum marks, if low top up with hydraulic brake fluid oil.
19). Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level?
Identify the coolant reservoir and check the level against the minimum and maximum markings, if low top up with water or a mixture of water and anti-freeze but let the engine cool first before releasing the cap to top up.
