EYESIGHT REQUIREMENTS - DRIVING TEST EDGWARE
Before your first driving lesson starts your instructor will ask you to read a number plate so as to determine if you reach the minumum required level by law to drive.
You will need to be able to read a number plate at a distance of:
- 20 Metres for a vehicle with the new style number plate
- 20.5 Metres for a vehicle with the old style number plate
When you applied for your driving licence, you should have declared if you have any visual condition that affects your eyes.

Driving Test - Eye Sight Test
When you take your driving test you will be asked to do an eyesight test at the very begining, if you fail to read the first number plate, you will then be asked to read a different one. If you fail to read the second number plate the examiner must get a tape measure to measure the exact distance for the third and final attempt.
If you fail to read a number palate on all three attempts at the required distance, the test is classed as failed on eyesight. Your provisional licence will also be revoked, which means you will have to re-apply for your licence and satisfy the DVLA that you meet the required level to drive.
